American Sentences
"American Sentences" an exhibition of contemporary art in a variety of mediums,
was presented in the Fall of 1999. Site specific works, installations, multimedia,
along with more traditional work occupied 5,000 square feet of the former R.H.
Simon Silk Mill. In the last decade, the building, and its century old walls,
have become a haven for artists. This invitational exhibition, "American Sentences",
continued the transformation of this unique location from a commercial space
to a truly alternative art house. The previous exhibitions, "Inside the Mill",
and "Image/Mileage" began to expose the building's potential. Resident as well
as regional artists have taken advantage of the spacious and often inspiring
complex. The Union Hill Arts Building continues to encourage and challenge artists.
These efforts were made visible in the American Sentences exhibition.

More inclusive than exclusive, American Sentences joined disciplines, techniques and visions. Themes were personal and unique. Experimental and aggressive, these artists' only connection may be their dedication to creating an art experience. Disparate and innovative, the selected works challenge viewers to rethink visual language. The exhibit, like a visual poem, informs and moves the viewer into the artist's space and mind.
Participating artists included: Mia Brownell, Margaret Cogswell, Adrian Crispin, Joanna Da Toca, James Dustin, Dahlia Elsayed, Stalyn Freile, Penelope Gaitanis, Nicola Ginzel, Alex Koslopov, Sharon Libes, Nathaniel Lieb, Karin Luner, Kristine Marx, David Melamed, Margaret Murphy, Frank Palaia, Jim Respess, German Rodriguez, Rachel Stevens, Kari Steevs, Lynn Tondrick, and Cindy Tower.
